Dear Colleagues,

2007 was rich in different events at the Mari State University. 

  
 	The Academic Council on awarding Doctor's and Candidate's Degree in Finno-Ugric languages at the Mari State University had several sessions during which six scholars got their Candidate's Degree. Their theses were devoted to the research of different aspects of the Mari (Guseva Elina "Stylistic Characteristics of a Verbal Portrait in Mari Novels", Orzayeva Larisa "The Development of the Mari Literary Language Lexis during the Second Half of the 20th Century"), Mordva (Asanova Irina" The Vocabulary of the Mordva Languages, Reflecting Peasants Life", Shemerova Nadezhda "Mordva Children's Bilingualism", Samosudova Liliya "Spatial and Temporal Relationship in Erzya"), Khanty (Lel'chova Fedosya "Structrural-Semantic Types of Word Combinations in Khanty") languages.

 	On the 23rd of November the University celebrated its 35th anniversary.

 	In December the History and Philology Department organized a Conference dedicated to the outstanding Mari scholar Valerian Vasiliev (125 years on the 13th of January 2008).

 	At the First Volga regional exhibition the Publishing Center of the University was awarded three diplomas for its work. One of the nomination was the book written by Aleksei Ivanov and Sergei Starikov "Revolution of 1917-1918 in Mari District (on the Materials of the Uezd Peasants' Deputies Congresses)". During 2007 the University Center published 20 monographs, 25 manuals, collections of abstracts and papers of 13 conferences, several collections of scholarly papers, dictionaries. All in all there were 198 items of books and brochures.

 	On the 21st of December there was a presentation of a new scholarly journal "Vestnik Mariiskogo Universiteta". There will be articles on urgent question of the humanitarian, agricultural, technical and economical disciplines. 

 	In May 2007 Vladimir Glukhova and Natalia Glukhova published their monograph in Russian "Sistemnaya Rekonstruktsiya Mariiskoi Etnicheskoi Identichnosti" . - Yoshkar-Ola, 2007.- 184 p.


            The book consists of an Introduction, four Chapters, a Summary, a Bibliography, a List of folklore sources. The introductory part: 1) shows the actuality of the work and its aim; 2) reviews different theoretical approaches to the study of ethnicity in cultural and psychological anthropology; 3) points to the sources and amount of empirical material; 4) discusses the methodology; formulates the hypothesis of the work. The plan of the book is shown below.
