Call for papers: Gender issues in contemporary Finno-Ugric cultures
(University of Groningen, The Netherlands)
In recent decades, research on how cultures define differences between the
sexes has developed into an important aspect of contemporary scholarship in
the Humanities. But to what extent has this development improved and
broadened work in the Finno-Ugric field? And how can gender studies
contribute to the study of Finno-Ugric cultures? Or to put it another way,
how should Finno-Ugric cultural studies answer to the developments in gender
studies?
During this workshop we want to explore the contemporary implementation of
gender theories in the field of cultural research in Estonia, Finland and
Hungary (though not excluding the other Finno-Ugric cultures) within
different theoretical frameworks. We want to create a forum where PhD
students and senior scholars can discuss the current trends of gender
effects in interdisciplinary cultural research, as well as the opportunities
and challenges for the future.
We invite scholars and postgraduates from Cultural studies, as well as
Literary, Film and Media studies to send an abstract of approximately 250
words. Possible questions could include, but are not restricted to:
- How did gender studies broaden the scope of cultural studies in the
Finno-Ugric countries?
- Which fields of research were opened up by the introduction of gender
as an innovative perspective and what new methods consequently came into use
in Finno- Ugric cultural studies?
- Has gender theory caused a (re)discovery of women in the cultural
field?
- How have existing images of actors in the cultural field
(authors, producers, directors) changed?
- Can we see a (re)formation of the canon?
Keynote speaker: Professor Johanna Laakso (Vienna)
Deadline for abstracts: February 1, 2010
The workshop will be held June 3- 4 2010 at the University of Groningen in
the Netherlands.
