WINTER SCHOOL
SAAMI LANGUAGE DOCUMENTATION AND REVITALIZATION
BODØ (NORWAY), 1–11 MARCH 2010

The winter school provides training in language
documentation and revitalization. The courses are
specifically designed for advanced students, scholars,
language teachers and activists and will provide a solid
grounding in the objectives of contemporary documentary
linguistics. Theoretical, practical, ethical and technical
aspects will be covered. The focus lies on documentary
linguistics, but the winter school will also provide
practical training in methods of language maintenance and
revitalization.

VENUE AND PARTICIPATION
The winter school is held over two weeks from March 1–11 at
the Bodø University College. It will be open for anyone who
is interested in Saami languages, language documentation
and revitalization. Even students specializing in other
minority languages of Northern Europe are invited to
participate. We hope to attract students who are new to
language documentation as well as scholars or activists who
are already engaged in documentation and revitalization
efforts. Advanced students from the Saami communities will
be particularly encouraged to apply. 
Prospective participants will need to demonstrate a minimum
of one year of academic training in linguistics or a
related field; or at least basic active knowledge of one of
the Saami languages.
There are places for 30 participants.

COURSES
-Lectures (on theoretical, practical, ethical and technical
aspects, language endangerment, language documentation and
Saami linguistics)
-Fieldwork tutorials (three parallel groups work under the
guidance of experienced field workers with a native speaker
of a little-known Saami language; aim of the tutorials is
to teach the essential skills for each component of the
workflow in language documentation, including the use of
recording equipment and data processing tools)
-Groundwork seminars (on selected topics of language
documentation and revitalization)
-Technical demonstrations (convey hands-on skills such as
using different types of hard- and software)

PARTICIPANTS
The winter school will be open for anyone who is interested
in Saami languages, language documentation and
revitalization. Even students specializing in other

REGISTRATION
The Winter School is free of charge. Cheap accomodation is
offered in shared double rooms.

-Full name and affiliation (if any)
-Address, Email address, Telephone number
-A brief statement of your background in General
linguistics or Saami studies (names of courses attended,
name of university/training institution, experience with
community language work, etc.), details of any planned
field or community work on Saami or other language(s)
-Please indicate if you are a member of SaamiDocNet (see
http://saamidocnet.uit.no/)

GRANTS
If you wish to attend the winter school, and you are not
affiliated with an institution which can cover your travel
costs, you may apply for a grant. Grants cover travel
to/from Bodø (including visa, if needed), accomodation in a
shared double room and an additional  allowance for three
daily meals.
It is also possible to apply for subsidies to cover parts
of your travel and living costs.
Depending on the total sum of the applied grants, we can
subsidize a maximum of around 20 participants.

In order to apply, you will need to supply the following
information (in addition to your registration):
-Evidence of proficiency in the English language. Note that
the language of all courses at the winter school will be
English
-A one-page-statement explaning your reasons for applying
for the winter school
-The name of an academic from a recognized university or
Saami institution who is willing to provide a reference in
support of your application
-The expected costs of your travel to and from the Winter
School, including costs of visa application, transfer from
home to nearest airport etc.

The language for the application should be English or any
of the Saami languages. Please send the details as soon as
