Irja Seurujärvi-Kari, (i.a.) long-time lecturer of Sámi at the University of Helsinki, will defend her PhD thesis on January 21st in Helsinki – in the history of the University of Helsinki, this will be the first public examination of a doctoral thesis which will take place in Sámi language. In her work, with the title "Ale jaskkot eatnigiella - Alkuperäiskansaliikkeen ja saamen kielen merkitys saamelaisten identiteetille", Seurujärvi-Kari has examined the role of the indigenous peoples' movement and the Sámi language for the Sámi identity.
