Yoshkar-Ola, Republic of Mari El, Russian Federation
July 2-16, 2017
<>Mari State University is happy to announce the annual Summer School of Mari Language and Culture organized by the Institute of National Culture and Intercultural Communication and the International Office of Mari State University. The Summer School will take place in Yoshkar-Ola, capital of the Republic of Mari El, on July 2-16, 2017. Your studies will be enhanced by an experienced teaching staff, a cozy and secure environment, and the opportunity to explore traditional Mari culture.
Feel free to apply in order to learn more about the Mari language, a language related to many other Finno-Ugric/Uralic languages, including Finnish, Estonian, Hungarian, Komi, Udmurt, Erzya and Moksha. Come and discover the unique Mari culture, which has its roots in pre-Christian pagan religious beliefs. You will be taught to speak, write, and understand Mari speech, learn the traditional customs of the Maris, see the Volga River, and feel the spirit of this Finno-Ugric minority located in Russia’s heartland.
This year the Summer School program will consist of two parallel modules: one for beginners and one for advanced students (those who are continuing studying Mari). The classes and workshops will be delivered by the experienced professors of Mari State University.
Fees
Total cost of participation is 30,000 Rubles (about 500 USD). This includes: the registration fee of 6,000 Rubles (about 100 USD), tuition fees, accommodation in the student dormitory, meals in the student cafeteria (twice per day: breakfast and lunch), the cultural programme, and local transportation for the duration of the Summer School.
How to apply
To apply for the Summer School, write an email to inter_office at marsu.ru. The fees should be paid in Russian Rubles upon arrival to the cashiers of Mari State University. The sum is calculated based on the USD exchange rate of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation on the day of payment.
Deadline for application and payment of the registration fee: May 15, 2017
The application form should be submitted to the International Office of Mari State University. You may also send a copy of the receipt from the bank as confirmation of your payment.
Invitations and visas
The International Office of Mari State University provides assistance in preparing the invitations needed to attain a Russian entry visa to all non-Russian citizens applying for participation.
Citizens of EU-member states can apply for a Russian short-term visa on a simplified basis; they will receive letters of invitation from the Mari State University. Non-EU citizens (e.g. American, Canadian, etc.) will receive official invitation forms. Both kinds of invitations will be sent to applicants far in advance by regular air mail, or, in case of urgency, by courier mail.
Citizens of the CIS countries (e.g. Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, etc.) should send their application form and pay the registration anyway.
Logistics
A direct train leaves every evening from Moscow to Yoshkar-Ola from the Kazansky railway station (Kazansky vokzal). The trip lasts approximately 16 hours and arrives the next morning. MarSU International Office staff will greet you upon arrival and provide transportation from the railway station. If you choose to come via the cities of Kazan or Cheboksary, we can offer advice and instruction.
