[Ura-list] Raija Koponen in memoriam

[Johanna Laakso]

Dear URA-LIST community,

colleagues in Helsinki just informed me that Raija Koponen, long-time editor of the Dictionary of Karelian (Karjalan kielen sanakirja) and editor-in-chief of its last volumes, has succumbed to serious illness and passed away, tuonilmazih, today. Her work will be remembered with gratitude by all speakers, researchers and revitalizers of the Karelian language.

This example sentence in her magnum opus, the Dictionary, from Kontokki, can also be applied to everything she did to preserve the riches of Karelian for future generations:

Ken om moast́eri starinan šanoja ta šanou ńiitä äijär rahvahalla, šoau jo šillä tuonilmasen šijan.
‘Who is a master of stories and tells a lot of them to the people will have deserved a place in the Otherworld.’
