Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted to announce the *Summer School in Uralic Formal
Linguistics* (SShUFL, pronounced ‘shuffle’), which will take place on *August
21st-26th, 2023 * at the Hungarian Research Centre for Linguistics in
*Budapest*.

The school has an explicit focus on formal approaches to the study of
Uralic languages.

The Uralic language family consists of more than 30 languages, primarily
spoken in northeastern Europe and in northern Asia (Siberia). The
grammatical profiles of Uralic languages present important implications for
the development of linguistic theory, but these languages are not
prominently featured in formal linguistic theorizing. The goal of the
summer school is to raise awareness about the theoretical interest of
Uralic languages and promote them not only as languages in need of more
detailed documentation, but also as languages rich in theoretically
interesting phenomena.

The courses have an explicit focus on the existing *formal analyses* of a
number of Uralic languages (e.g., Khanty, Mari, Nenets, Udmurt) and will
serve as an ideal springboard for independent student projects.

SShUFL is aimed at advanced *undergraduate and graduate students with a
background in formal linguistics*.

We are happy to provide *free accommodation* in shared rooms (2-4 people)
for 20 students. In addition to that, we provide a limited number of *travel
scholarships* (of up to 200 euros) to the students who need them to get to
Budapest.

If you are interested in either of these, please indicate so in the
Registration form. Note that in this case you need to apply by *the
early-bird deadline (April 23rd)*.

If you do not need accommodation or a travel scholarship, the *general
application deadline is May 21st*.

We envision SShUFL as an in-person event, though there are some options for
online participation. We encourage in-person participation, but if you are
interested in joining in online, please indicate so in the Registration
form.
