Dear all,

The 2025 Winter School of Finno-Ugric Studies will be held at the 
University of Vienna between *17 and 22 February 2025* (Monday through 
Saturday).

The winter school will be a hybrid teaching event: students can 
participate in person, or over the Internet. There is a limited number 
of slots available for in-person participation. There are no 
participation fees, but we also cannot provide travel grants this year. 
Please apply for assistance at your home universities and make your own 
travel & accommodation arrangements. If you wish to participate (either 
in person or digitally), please register at 
https://elomake.helsinki.fi/lomakkeet/132742/lomake.html by 13 December; 
we will inform accepted students by the end of the following week. 
Prospective participants will receive further information in the due 
course of time.

The preliminary agenda for this winter school is:

  * Language courses (students must choose one when registering):
      o Mansi (taught by Daria Zhornik, LMU Munich)
      o Karelian (taught by Johanna Laakso, University of Vienna)
  * Workshop on quotative strategies (taught by Denys Teptiuk,
    University of Tartu)
  * Workshop on Bible translations as data for comparative studies
    (taught by Ksenia Shagal, LMU Munich & Jeremy Bradley, University of
    Vienna & Johannes Hirvonen, LMU Munich)
  * Guest lectures:
      o Rogier Blokland (Uppsala University): The very first text in
        Saami: a new discovery
      o Riho Grünthal (University of Helsinki): Causative alternation in
        the Uralic languages
      o Third guest lecture to be announced
  * A student colloquium

Updates and a preliminary schedule will be published at

Students are encouraged to give an active contribution at the winter 
school, either in one of the workshops or in the student colloquium. 
Students who participate in all teaching events at the winter school are 
awarded 5 ECTS if they give an active contribution and 3 ECTS if they do 
not.
