Dear colleagues,
We are still eagerly looking for and accepting submissions to our
workshop pertaining to the verbalization of motion events at the coming
congress. When people talk about motion (be it intransitive or
transitive, i.e., moving oneself or moving something or someone) in a
given language, how are the different semantic aspects (most
prominently: manner - on foot, on wheels, swimming, flying; path - in,
out, up, down) expressed and structured? Further details can be found at
https://cifu14.ut.ee/symposium-b5/ <https://cifu14.ut.ee/symposium-b5/>.
Abstracts must be submitted by *30 September 2024* (see
https://cifu14.ut.ee/2nd-circular/ <https://cifu14.ut.ee/2nd-circular/>
concerning practicalities). Critically, we are eager to have
*genealogical and methodological diversity* in our workshop, which is to
say: If you are looking at languages often not centred in typological
generalizations on Uralic (anything but Hungarian, Finnish, and
Estonian, if we're honest), and/or are dealing with the topic at hand
through a novel framework (also in regard to the "large" languages!), we
will be eager to hear your talk. The intersection between the
verbalization of motion events and other categories such as TAME marking
is also highly relevant.
The workshop will conclude in a discussion on future research and
publication ventures pertaining to the verbalization of motion events:
what should be done to ensure an accessible description of this topic
for the Uralic language family writ large?
All the best,
The organizers (Jeremy Bradley, Nikolett F. Gulyás, Johannes Hirvonen)
