The Udmurt research center announced on the social network VKontakte
the death of Vasily Mikhailovich Vanyushev, Doctor of Philological
Sciences, Professor, and Chief Researcher at the Ural Branch of the
Russian Academy of Sciences.

Vasily Mikhailovich spent many years studying the history of Udmurt
literature and conducting a comparative analysis of the national
literatures of the Ural-Volga region. His work had a significant
impact on the development of this field.

Vanyushev's significant achievements include editing thirteen volumes
of Grigory Vereshchagin's Collected Works. From 1998 to 2004, he
headed the Department of Udmurt Literature and Literatures of the
Peoples of Russia at Udmurt State University.

He was actively involved in scientific life: he was a member of the
dissertation councils of the Mordovian State University (Saransk), the
Chuvash State University (Cheboksary) and the Udmurt State University
(Izhevsk), and was also deputy chairman of the dissertation council at
the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of
Linguistics and Linguistics in Izhevsk.

For his achievements, Vasily Mikhailovich was awarded numerous state,
government, scientific and public awards.

One of Vanyushev's research areas was the Udmurt epic. He translated
the classic Udmurt epic, Mikhail Khudyakov's Dorvyzhy, into Udmurt. I
also had the honor of working closely with him when I translated the
epic into Finnish and published it in 2009.

Vanyushev also wrote poetry himself and, for example, in 2010, he
participated in the poetry competition of the Oulu Finno-Ugric
Literature Congress with his works related to Udmurt history.

A large international group of friends and colleagues will miss this
passionate expert on Udmurt literature and folklore.
