(A Study Abroad Summer Program of the University of Pennsylvania)
Lasting six weeks during the summer, the Penn-in-India program is designed
to provide students with a unique opportunity to examine cultural,
socio-economic, and political issues of contemporary Indian life through
academic study as well as personal cultural experiences. The program based
in Pune offers a wide and exciting range of courses (taught in English):
1. Sources of Indian Traditions
2. Health & Society
3. Community Development, Environment
4. Performing Arts of South Asia (classical dance & music)
Students will choose two courses and will have the added option of studying
any Indian language. Courses will earn Penn credits. The classes will
combine field trips within and outside Pune as well as field work in the
Pune community. Students will have an opportunity to participate in
community projects and seek internships with museums, industries, and
hospitals, depending on their areas of interest. Arrangements will be made
for the accepted students to be housed with Indian families in the area.
