Likely opening for Tamil instructor - Call for early applications and
expressions of interest

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics at York
University in Toronto ( http://dlll.yorku.ca/ ) expects to offer
beginning and intermediate Tamil, starting in 2009-10. The courses will
be staffed for the first few years by contract faculty, earning
approximately CAD 16,000 per two-semester course. (The courses will be
scheduled on two days per week, so that the instructor will be free to
seek supplementary employment on other days.)

Hiring procedures are governed by the collective agreement with Local
3903 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, which groups contract
faculty, TAs & research assistants at York. According to the
established procedures, early "blanket" applications must be received by
January 31, 2009. Assuming the courses are approved, a second
application window will be open for two weeks beginning April 22, 2009,
when the job descriptions ("Postings") will be made available.

We will be looking for an instructor with university level
qualifications and experience. Toronto has a sizeable Tamil-heritage
community, from which the majority of the students is likely to be
drawn. Experience dealing with groups with mixed prior exposure to Tamil
will therefore be an advantage. Class size is expected to be 20-30.
The Department is home to a number of language/culture programmes as
well as to a substantial linguistics section. (Linguistics has a
separate website at http://dlll.yorku.ca/linguistics/ ) We also have a
graduate programme in linguistics and applied linguistics (
http://www.yorku.ca/gradling/ )

I would be glad to hear informally from anyone who might be interested
in applying for these courses, either now or at the end of April.
(Please respond to me <iansmith at yorku.ca> , not to the general list!)
