Dear colleagues,

Contributions are invited for an edited manuscript entitled Perspectives on Medical English as a Lingua Franca, to be published by Cambridge Scholars Press.

Medical English as a lingua franca (MELF) constitutes an important trajectory for English as a lingua franca (ELF) research. The cross-border flow of health care professionals, along with the dominant position of English in the field of medicine, has set the stage for MELF interactions to figure prominently in health care settings around the globe. Critics of ELF research have pointed to its relatively limited scope of contexts and domains previously considered, and it is in this respect that MELF holds potential to extend ELF's research breadth. This book will bring together recent research on the topic, considering MELF from multiple perspectives.

We are particularly interested in contributions in the following areas.

  *   Linguistic features specific to MELF interactions;
  *   Theoretical constructs informing MELF research;
  *   Regional contexts, settings and variations framing MELF perspectives;
  *   Patient safety and the delivery of quality health care in MELF contexts;
  *   Training medical professionals for MELF interactions;
  *   MELF interactions across health care specialties and disciplines;
  * Relationships between MELF and the larger sub-field of ELF.

We invite researchers to submit an abstract of up to 500 words outlining a proposed chapter on this topic grounded in empirical research, and a brief bio (maximum 100 words) describing your role and affiliation. While this volume frames MELF from an applied linguistics perspective, we welcome proposals from researchers across disciplines (e.g., Nursing, Medicine, Public Health, etc.). Please submit your title, abstract, and bio to the editors Gregory Tweedie gregory.tweedie at ucalgary.ca<mailto:gregory.tweedie at ucalgary.ca> and Robert Johnson johnsor at ucalgary.edu.qa<mailto:johnsor at ucalgary.edu.qa> by 1 December, 2019.

If you have any further questions regarding your title and abstract, please email the editors for further information and guidance. Upon reviewing abstracts and providing any necessary feedback, the editors will invite selected authors to submit a full chapter of up to 8,000 words in length (including abstract, references, tables and appendices).
