Brit. euphemism

   This is an anecdote to the items about the British euphemism "spend a
penny."   A year or two ago I read a newspaper account  about  an American
businessman in England who was giving a  talk on some financial topic.

    He wanted to make the point that  one must  be willing to invest money
in order to make money.  As he put it, "You have to spend a penny to make a
penny," and he was then startled  to this serious point  greeted with
laughter  by the audience.
