My slang guru, Dr Robert L Chapman, prints it as "by 1940s A satisfactory
rating, but not a high one. [earliest quote I could find for this was from
TIME 12/5/83 but Chap's date can't be off by much] fr the passing but
mediocre grade traditionally given in colleges to well-bred but not serious
students"
