I wonder if these aren't really parabolas. What looks to be a hemisphere
might actually be parabolic or have a parabola in the innermost section;
same with a cylindrical ceiling.

This is just a suggestion as I don't know anything about acoustics other
than this property of parabolas. I do remember from geometry, though, that
parabolas can take on deceiving shapes.
