I've only ever heard /g@ 'do/ in the US by people who know anything about
theatre, but the Brits (and Anglo-Irish like Becket) do I believe place the
accent on the first syllable, as in many other Frenchy words (garage,
cafe)... giving us /GOD o/...anything with a /t/ is spelling
pronunciation....  This reminds me of my 9th grade teacher who insisted that
Thoreau's name should have first syllable stress... but I never figured out
if that's what Thoreau used.... I think the majority of Americans today have
second syllable stress....?
