   CHAIN STORE AGE was published by the same group as NATION'S RESTAURANT NEWS.  In each issue was a special section called "Fountain-Restaurant News," about 40-60 pages long.  (All food cites will be from this section.)  An "At the Fountain" column listed the specials at Woolworths and Walgreens all across the country.
   I haven't seen "sloppy joe" just yet, but I'm now at 1952.  I'll try to read some more today.
   Perhaps useful to "sloppy" is "jalopy," from CHAIN STORE AGE (Fountain-Restaurant News), May 1952, pg. 6, col. 2:

_Chili Weiner_ is a popular fall and winter specialty.  It is made by placing a frankfurter in split bun, covering it with chili sauce and (if desired by the customer) chopped onions.

HOT DOGS (CORN DOG?)
May 1952, pg. 52, col. 2--_HOT SNACK._  Pronto Pups, the weiner-done-in-a-bun and served on a stick, introduced by Pronto (Col. 3--ed.) Pups, Mead Building, Portland, Ore.  The weiner is inserted on a skewer dipped in the patented Pronto Pup batter and then fried in a deep fryer for three minutes.  Batter can be mixed as needed.

CONEY ISLAND SALAD

_Coney Island Salad_ consisted of two grilled frankfurters with homemade potato salad, sliced ripe tomato, queen olive, bread and butter at 55 cents.
