Countable folks

...and I'm beginning to hear "folk" as well as the plural, e.g. "all the
good folk over in Melrose Hall." Perhaps the generators of the singular
have been boning up on their Howard Pyle or Dover editions of the Pink
Fairy book. Is this happening elsewhere?
