"BASEBALL" IN VILLAGE VOICE

From the latest edition of the VILLAGE VOICE (www.villagevoice.com), Jockbeat:

Baseball was born in the Northeast, but in the 155 years since the first game was played in Hoboken, New Jersey...

(I'll let George Thompson write the letter to the editor, although he should ask for a correcting STORY--ed.)

SAFIRE'S UMLAUT

Check out William Safire's "On Language" column in the Sunday New York Times. He corrects himself on "unlaut," but the American Dialect Society listserv is never mentioned.
For the Great Man to issue a correction, he must have received a ton of mail (that was not printed).
