(OED has "osteria" from about 1605. However, it meant an "inn" or place of lodging, not a bistro. Check the news databases. Is Hanson re-popularizing "osteria" and changing its meaning?--ed.)
My Italian dictionary, Sabatini-Coletti, has "osteria" "from the 14th century, meaning a place where one is served food and drinks. In older times it also could provide lodging."
So Hanson did not change its meaning. But OED maybe should review the phrasing of the definition.
