   I'm making myself look bad.
We have the full text of the BROOKLYN EAGLE, WASHINGTON POST, and NEW YORK TIMES. "Windy City" starts in 1886. The huge MAKING OF AMERICA databases didn't help. LOC's AMERICAN MEMORY gave me 1885 at best.
The Chicago convention is a month before this. I didn't look yet, but I'll bet you they nominate Garfield.

   17 July 1880, CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, pg. 4, col. 5:
      _Off for Chicago._
Maud S and Dream were shipped to Chicago last night in a special car, the property of W. H. Vanderbilt. Both nags were in apple-pie condition, and will give a good account of themselves in the Windy City.
