[to see the issue, suppose that instead of "adultery" the sentence
had "sodomy".]

2.  NYT Book Review, 7/16/06, p. 28, iUniverse ad for The Golden Door
by Charles B. Nam:

Relatives awaiting immigrants from Eastern Europe in 1893 discover
they died at sea.

[try instead: "discover they don't know which port the ship is headed
