EEBO shows the saying ("By Hammer and Hand all Arts doe
Stand") as a sort of motto on the title-page of the <<Book
of Drawing . . .>> attributed to Durer but compiled by
Thomas Jenner, 1652 (called the second edition).  An
antecedent in Latin or German?
