I learned this in LA in the 50's (on the playground) as follows:

Left, left, left, right, left
First they hired me,
then they fired me,
then I got chicken and left,
  left, left, right, left.

hayfoot/strawfoot  I heard was from WWI  and I also wondered about how
to tell the difference between the two.
