Mid-thirty-ish black man describing a fight:

"He _liftes_ [lI at ftIz] me up an' drops me on the ground."

I would have expected "lif's." Perhaps it's another example of
attempting to rise to a higher register <har! har!> in a formal

Judge Greg Mathis:

"You wait till you get to court to calculate it?! I'd-a had it on my
mind the whole time! I'd-a _BIN thinkin'_ about it!"

All say, "How hard it is that we have to die"---a strange complaint to
come from the mouths of people who have had to live.
