The files of The Yale Book of Modern Proverbs (forthcoming) has an
excellent earlier citation in 1959. The ADS mailing list mechanism is
behaving in an oddly recalcitrant fashion when Charlie attempts to
share this information, so I will attempt to post it here now:

Nostalgia is not what it used to be.
1959 Peter De Vries, _Tents of Wickedness_ (Boston: Little, Brown) 6:
"No. Nostalgia, as his Uncle Joshua had said, ain't what it used to
be. Which made it pretty complete. Nothing was what it used to
be--not even nostalgia." YBQ De Vries(2); Ratcliffe (2006) 325. Cf.
"The PAST is not what it used to be."
