Yes, I was thinking that one might be a kind of hypercorrection.  But it was the best I could do in trying to come up with a model for "nit and gritty" < "nit 'n' gritty".  The thing is you first have to mishear "nitty gritty" before you can misanalyze it, unlike the "black and red fish" type of reanalysis.  And "nitty gritty" is even one of those rhyming thingies we're usually fond of for these opaque expressions.  Weird.
