"Tammany Hall is one of the public hotels, and noted for the public
meetings of the democratic party, or Bucktails, as they are called."

Footnote 9, same page:  "From their wearing the tail of a buck in
their hats at an annual festivity."

Dated Dec. 1818 in running header.  John M. Duncan, _Travels through
Part of the United States and Canada in 1818 and 1819_ (Glasgow,
1823), II, 247.  GBooks (but not a GBhit).
