Do these "rules" exist outside of classrooms and books?

"I _first began_ by referring to Justice Scalia’s musings..."

Back in the day, we spent the first eight years of our scholastic life with
teachers using everything at their command short of physical punishment to
force us pupils absolutely *never* to use "first begin" in any way, shape,
or form in any form of "expression," be it in speech or writing, whether in
the classroom or in the schoolyard.

All say, "How hard it is that we have to die!"---a strange complaint to
come from the mouths of people who have had to live.
