Thanks for all the replies, which I've shared with Roger Kaza. Also, I noticed "French hornist" (not just "hornist") in a recent online newsletter of the Jazzinstitut  Darmstadt (Germany). So even music experts sensitive to the latest trends in their field have not totally set aside "French" when referring to the instrument. -------Below my signoff is the relevant excerpt.
