When it comes to slang and "regionalisms,"

I got a reprint of Cab Calloway's "Hepster's Dictionary, 1944 edition"
today, and I was surprised to find _hard_ glossed in it as "fine, good."
The only other place where I've heard "hard" used in that meaning is
Marshall, Texas.

All say, "How hard it is that we have to die!"---a strange complaint to
come from the mouths of people who have had to live.
