The phrasing of this snippet is odd. Jujutsu (alternatively jujitsu) is at least several hundred years old.

The sport of Kendo is almost that old, although the name appeared in the nineteen twenties. Aikido is a specialized development of jujutsu, emphasizing non-initiation of the attack. 

So it's not clear what the Nippon Times author meant by 'parental art'.
