And in older varieties of English, thank to Scandinavian influence, sometime earlier, whence “skirt” (vs. “shirt”), “scatter” (vs. “shatter”), “screw” (vs. “shrew”), “scabby” (vs. “shabby”),…. So maybe scrapnel is just Nordic shrapnel (from the Battle of Skreveport).
