Several references contain entries for a version of the saying in the
subject line, e.g., The Yale Book of Quotations from Fred Shapiro,
Best Guide to Humorous Quotations from Nigel Rees, and The Cynic's
Lexicon from Jonathon Green. The words are ascribed to J. Frank Dobie,
and the excellent supporting citation is a 1945 book by Dobie.

The Quote Investigator website now has a post with two new citations
in 1943 and 1944. The 1943 citation is an article about Dobie, and the
1944 citation is an article by Dobie.
