[Ads-l] "information" as a plural

Chloe Melas, entertainment reporter, CNN, just now:

"There have been a whirlwind of petitions filed since."

I wonder alternatively if people are hypercorrecting the dreaded "There is."

However, "petitions," not whirlwind, is salient.
