Dear AN-langers

The steering committee for the International Conference on Austronesian
Linguistics has for some time been considering possible venues and dates
for the next (ninth) ICAL.

It has now been agreed that 9ICAL will be held in Canberra, Australia,
during the week of January 7-13, 2002, hosted by the Department of
Linguistics, Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, Australian
National University.

The 5th Conference on Oceanic Linguistics (COOL5) will also be be held in
Canberra immediately after 9ICAL (probably during the following week,
January 14-20).

The proposal to hold the next Oceanic conference back-to-back with the next
ICAL conference was made at COOL4, which was held in Niue in July this
year. The reason for wishing to hold ICAL and COOL together on this
occasion is that the time gap between the two conferences has been
narrowing in recent years and the Oceanicists did not want to wait until
2003 to hold their next meeting. The aim has been to hold ICAL
approximately every four years. COOL on the other hand is held each two
years, approximately, but ideally at least one year before or after ICAL
conferences. However, over the past decade ICAL has been held every 3.5
years, so it has become hard to maintain the gap.

We will post exact dates and other information in due course. In the
meantime, you all have more than two years to plan your papers and
sight-seeing!

Best wishes

Andy Pawley
