Subject:Info for Translation course query

I'm preparing a presentation on learning how to translate to/from
Arabic and
would like to ask for some input from Arabic-L and AATA members. The
presentation is at the American Translators Association conference in
November, so I'd appreciate responses as soon as possible. Members can
respond to me directly (jmurg at ttlc.net) and I'll be happy to post a
summary.

Note: I'm interested in how people can learn to do all types of
translation:
literary or commercial, whatever.

1. As far as I know there is no academic certificate or degree program
in
Arabic<>English translation in the U.S. or Canada. Is that correct?

2. Also, is it correct that there are no regularly offered courses in
Arabic-English translation in N. America? I'm aware that there are
translation projects that focus on doing literary translation but not
teaching translation (such as U. of Arkansas, PROTA, etc.), teachers of
Arabic have their students do translations as class exercises or
homework,
there are some one-off workshops or courses from time to time, and
there is
a course at Georgetown U. this semester that they plan to offer again
next
semester (but it's not an established course offering). Does anyone
know of
anything else?

3. Is there any way to do Arabic-English translation study via a
distance-learning program? I'm aware of one such program, based in the
U.K.
It costs several hundred pounds sterling for a three-month course. Is
there
anything based in the U.S. like this? Anything else anywhere? Does
anyone
have an opinion of the British program [inter-col.net]?

4. There is a self-study book available from Schreiber translation
company
in Maryland. Are there any other materials like this for Arabic-English
translation?

5. I'd appreciate advice and ideas on how to learn how to translate on
one's own.

Thanks for your help with this.

Best regards,
Jackie Murgida
