International Conference on Middle Arabic

Amsterdam, 22-25 October 2007

Hosted by the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Theme

The structural differences between spoken and written varieties in
the Arabic language, which has been a permanent reality throughout
its history, resulted in the creation and development of intermediate
and mixed varieties which were written and probably spoken as well.
These are commonly called « Middle Arabic » varieties.

After the publication of some pioneering research in that field,
Middle Arabic has been established as a new scientific branch in its
own right by Prof. J. Blau’s works. Although research on Middle
Arabic is of vital importance to the reconstruction of the history of
the Arabic language, its value has not been sufficiently recognized,
as becomes clear from the limited dispersion of the work in the field
and the absence of an overview on the research.

This colloquium aims firstly to review the current state of knowledge
of Middle Arabic, taking into account its historical and geographical
context, and secondly to debate the different methods of analysis,
and the problems of definition and terminology which are always
present in this field of research.

Keynote speakers: Yoshua Blau and Madiha Doss
