Columbia University Summer Arabic Language Program in Amman, Jordan

Appropriate for undergraduate and graduate students, the nine week program takes place from May 28-July 28, 2011. In its second year, the program offers three levels of Modern Standard Arabic (second year, third year, and fourth year). Students complete the equivalent of a full year of Arabic and are awarded 10 points of Columbia University credit upon successful completion of the program. Jordanian Arabic is offered as a one day course during the orientation period and in independent tutoring sessions with Teaching Assistants.

Field trips and cultural activities are organized to provide opportunities for students to strengthen their language skills and deepen their understanding of Arabic language, history, and culture. Sites visited in the past include Petra, Wadi Rum, and Ajloun Nature Reserve. Workshops or lectures introduce students to the local art, music, or film scene. Advanced students volunteer with local community organizations. There is a week long break during which students can travel independently throughout Jordan and the Middle East.

The application deadline is March 1.
