The Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages
The Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages seeks applicants for a
faculty position in the field of Classical Islamic Thought to begin
September 1, 2014.
Candidates should be able to design and teach advanced courses in Qur'anic
Studies and in one or more of the following areas:  Islamic theology and
its Greco-Arabic background, as well as courses in other fields of
classical Islamic thought such as heresiography and classical literary
theory. The language of instruction in this department (and only in this
department) is Modern Standard Arabic, but mastery of English is an
essential requirement.  A reading knowledge of French and/or German is
desirable. Applicants must be able to teach, in Arabic, service courses in
Arabic grammar, Islamic theology and philosophy to native speakers of
Arabic. Solid knowledge of the Arabic language and heritage and training in
modern Western methodologies are essential.
Applicants must have a PhD by the time of appointment. Rank will normally
at the assistant professor level; usual contracts are initially for four
years. Visiting scholars will be considered.
