Immersion Semester at AALIM

with optional University of Moulay Ismail courses


AALIM, the Arab American Language Institute in Morocco

Semester or
year abroad at AALIM: Strengthen your
Arabic skills and understanding of Moroccan culture at the AALIM center with
the possibility of attending classes at the University of Moulay Ismail in
Meknes.

Live in a host family. Meet
and interact with Moroccans daily. Experience Moroccan culture from the
inside.

Choice of
courses for a total of 20 hours of class/week for 13 weeks. Choose all
Arabic
or Arabic language plus content courses in Arabic or English. Most
universities
will accord 15-18 credit hours for your time at AALIM.
Students
with a sufficient level of Arabic are welcome to enroll in University of
Moulay
Ismail courses with Moroccan students. Due to late semester start at UMI,
these
courses are generally equivalent to 1 credit in a US university.

Arabic at the AALIM Center:
AR 101
through AR 500
Arabic,Modern Standard, all
levels, 10 hours a week
MSA covers
all the skill sets, speaking, listening, reading and writing. Specific
class topics
include vocabulary, grammar, practice reading aloud, spontaneous answering
in
Arabic, spontaneous and directed discussions in class, among others.

AR103 through AR 503
MSA
discussionsessions, 2
hours a week, any level, minimum enrollment required
Each week,
one student chooses and researches the discussion theme, communicates it
with
the             other students, presents it in class and moderates the
subsequent
discussion in coordination with the professor. Examples of topics chosen in
the
past: Arab Spring and its repercussions; Women’s rights in the Arab world;
Berbers in Morocco. Content varies according to class level.

week for intermediate and advanced students of Arabic

MCA 101

Topics in
Moroccan dialect, all levels, 3 hours a week

Language
partnersto practice your Arabic, 2 hours a
week. 1 credit for this activity.

REL 200
Islamic
Studies, 2-4 hours a week (2 to 4 credits),
course in mixture of Arabic and English, student must have some knowledge of
Arabic to take this course.

Managementprinciplesand the cultural
context, 3 hours a week, in English and Arabic (English lectures on
management
theory and weekly outings to visit local managers in their place of
business or
guest lectures by local managers about their business practices)

Geopolitical
Survey of North Africa and the Middle East, 3 hours a
week, in English and Arabic

SOC 200
Introduction
to North African Culture, 3 hours a week,
in English and Arabic

LIT 200
Arabic
Literature in Translation, 3 hours a week,
in English

FR 101 to
302
French, 3 hours a week, in French
This
language course covers all the skill sets, speaking, listening, reading and
writing. From beginning to intermediate levels, specific class topics
include
vocabulary, grammar, practice reading aloud, spontaneous answering in
French,
directed discussions in class, etc.

Moroccan
Francophone Literature, 3 hours a week,
in French

Community
Service, 1-3 hours a week, in French or
Arabic, 1 credit

the University of Moulay Ismail
Moulay Ismail University
has a student enrollment of over 20,000 students, who attend classes in the
modern buildings on the lush green campus, convenient to bus and collective
taxi lines. AALIM coordinates and supervises the program with UMI.
•   For advanced
students in Arabic, direct enrollment in content courses in Arabic.
