Uppsala University is an international research university focused on the development of science and education. Our most important assets are all the individuals who with their curiosity and their dedication makes Uppsala University one of Sweden's most exciting work places. Uppsala University has 41.000 students, 6,500 employees and a turnover of SEK 5,900 billion.

The subject area of Semitic languages at the Department of Linguistics and Philology has a long tradition of research in Semitic philology, linguistics and literature. The subject spans multiple Semitic languages, the most important ones in terms of the Department's educational offerings being Arabic, Hebrew and Aramaic/Syriac.

DUTIES: Overall responsibility for research and third-cycle (research level) education in the field of Semitic languages. This includes both advancing the field and pursuing own research. Duties also comprise teaching and supervision in the first, second and third cycles in the field of Semitic languages. Also included is information about research and developmental work and participation in the planning of research projects and the development of national and international networks. Assignments of an administrative nature, such as management, may also be relevant.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Persons are eligible to be employed as professor if they have demonstrated both academic and teaching competence (Higher Education Ordinance Ch. 4 Sec. 3). According to the Uppsala University Appointment Regulations, a further general eligibility requirement for teachers is that they must have the personal abilities necessary to fully carry out the duties of the position. Moreover, a person employed as professor must have demonstrated academic competence through independent research efforts and by having produced work of high international and national quality. Applicants must have demonstrated competence in planning, initiating, leading and developing research, have shown a capacity to acquire considerable funding grants in competition, and demonstrate well-documented competence in supervision in the third cycle.

Teaching competence must have been shown through qualifications in education and teaching. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA; Academic and teaching competence:
The assessment criteria for appointment to a teaching position at the University are the respective degrees of such competencies as are required for eligibility for the position.

In appointing an applicant to this professorship weight will primarily be afforded to academic and teaching competence, with special weight attaching to academic competence. Equal attention will be paid to the assessment of teaching competence and academic competence. However, these assessment criteria will be weighed against each other in such a way that an applicant who is deemed to be much more competent as a teacher than an academically somewhat more competent applicant will be ranked higher than the latter.

In assessing academic and teaching competence, quality will be the prime consideration. The scope, primarily in terms of depth and breadth, will also be of significance. In assessing academic competence very great weight will be afforded to research qualifications in Arabic with linguistic and philological orientation. Great weight will be given to documented academic competence in other Semitic languages. If qualifications are otherwise deemed to be equal, research qualifications in modern Arabic will be afforded weight. Qualifications regarding language development and cultural history as well as contemporary social orientation of relevance to the language area will be given weight. Academic competence also includes the degree of independence in terms of developing and leading research projects as well as contributing to the international discussion via publications in international journals or other internationally available publications.

Further, consideration will be given to the ability to plan, lead and develop courses and study programmes and teaching, research and third-cycle courses and study programmes, the capacity to competitively acquire grants for research, as well as a demonstrated ability to interact with others within the discipline. The ability to tie teaching to research currently being pursued in the subject will also be afforded weight. Teaching competence in the Semitic languages of importance to the Department's educational offerings (Arabic, Hebrew Aramaic/Syriac) will be regarded as a special qualification. The capacity to interact regarding tertiary-level teaching issues with actors within and outside the University is also part of teaching competence.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA; Other competence:
Beyond the above, the degree of administrative and other competence of importance with regard to the subject content and duties of the position will be considered. Attention will also be paid to the capacity to collaborate and the ability to develop and lead operations and personnel. Consideration will also be given to the capacity to cooperate with the wider community and to inform the public about research and developmental work. Documented collaboration with national and international contact nets will be afforded great importance.

When appointing new teachers, the University will employ the applicant who, following a holistic qualitative assessment of competence and skills, is deemed to have the best capacities to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to contribute to the advancement of operations
