Do I then need to specify which tier?

Nan,

Like most CLAN commands CHSTRING looks at speaker tiers only by default. To change anything or to look for anything on header tier you need to add +t@ option to command line.

Will chstring work to change strings such as "change_me_later" in a directory of files? I have tried using various combinations of +w +x, etc. using the general command structure

chstring +w +x +1 +s"|change_me_later|" "|control|" @

I have tried with and without the |, etc. and nothing changes. I know it's user error, but others must have tried this, no?
