Dear Molly,
That file is probably something like an MS-Word file. Here is a sample of what it looks like. I'm afraid CLAN can't do much with this.

I have no problem opening a cha file that already was checked without errors. However, when I run CHECK commands from Commands window, and it tells me the file has some errors, then I try to open the file by double clicking it, a window pops up saying my file may be corrupted. I have attached to this email the problematic data file and a screenshot of pop-up window which states the file may be corrupted.

I would suggest that you quit CLAN completely and restart it and see if the problem persists. If it does, then reboot your Mac and try again. After that you can try installing the latest version of CLAN on your Mac or sent to me directly the data file that crushes CLAN when you run CHECK and I will try to diagnose the problem. Also, tell me if you are running CHECK command from Commands window or you are using ESC-L or "Mode->Check opened file" menu.
