In Lushootseed, (earlier) m and n (and their glottalized neighbors) are=20
normally replaced by b and d, though there are certain specialized realms=
=20
(e.g. Raven's dialect, baby talk, possibly Latin-origin Catholic=20
terminology) where m and n are retained. =20

1) When did this sound shift take place? =20

2) I know some neighboring languages (e.g. Quileute) have a similar =
"nasal-
free" phonemic inventory.  Did they all shift together or are these more=20
or less independent developments?

3) Which other languages in the region share this nasal-free tendency?

4) Do Chinook Jargon speakers whose native languages have no nasal=20
consonants tend to replace them in the Jargon, too, or do they use a=20
significantly different phonetic repertoire when speaking the Jargon. =20
(Bearing in mind that Lushootseed speakers, anyhow, don't find nasal=20
consonants "hard" to say, just "odd".)  From what I've seen, Chinook=20
Jargon words that have passed into the Lushootseed vocabulary are=20
pronounced in denasalized fashion, e.g. the "white American" term derived=
=20
from "Boston" ends in -d, but I'm asking about *Jargon* pronunciation on=20
the part of native denasalizers.
