Before I go jump in a river:

***Have you ever looked at Franz Boas' "Kathlamet Texts" and other
Chinookan materials?  Fascinating to see many of the original words which
came to be simplified and used in Chinook Jargon.

***Wayne Suttles' "Coast Salish Essays" has many mentions of Chinook
Jargon influence on those cultures.  Among other topics he discusses the
phrase saXali tayi.  Apparently he too surmises that it is of nonnative
origin.

***Is Duane Pasco a carver also?  Hilary Stewart's excellent book on =
totem
poles depicts some poles carved by a Duane Pasco.

***Having mentioned the idea of republishing old, copyright-free CJ
materials, I now realize from some of your postings here that
web-publishing them would be a superior plan.  If we could ever operate a
virtual CJ library...

***Regarding the word lamnas "molasses" in npoqinis^cn / Spokane,
mentioned in a note on the SALISHAN group, it is of French origin but =
yes,
almost certainly via CJ in my opinion.  The only significant
direct borrowing from French into Southern Interior Salishan languages
would probably be religious vocabulary from the Jesuit Black Robe
missionaries.  Other than them, relatively few francophones spent much
time in this region. =20
