i realize this is rather off-topic, and ask for everyone's indulgence, but a friend of mine (artist/poet) is putting together an historical montage of sorts and is desparate to commemorate, in passing, the irish who helped build the railroads in this country.

the idea she is trying to capture is "coming through a place, building as one travels," and to express the idea as succinctly as possible, i.e., "coming through, building."

this is a bit embarassing, being an irish immigrant of sorts myself - i should know where to turn. but i do know there are many thoughtful linguists on this list, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
