Yes, it's a mildly confusing paragraph.  Father Le Jeune's punctuation
habits, and the difficulty of reading from a photocopy of an old, torn-up
_Kamloops Wawa_, compound the difficulty of decipherment.

My sense was, since the first sentence certainly refers to a "tanas man"
(boy), it perhaps goes on to describe him as a "skukum haws tanas" (prison-
boy).

The fact that there's no "kopa" (in) before "skukum haws" makes for the
worst confusion.
