Campbell's is just a very brief mention of the etym. The OED has the
word only in the 'horse' sense, for which the earliest example is 1841
(read 1843).

The earliest quots. I have are 1814 (Cayouses; in A. Ross _Fur Hunters_,
1956 ed., 22), 1825 (Cai-ouses; J. McLoughlin _Letters_ I. (1941) 7
cited in _Dict. Canadianisms_), and 1827 (Iskayouses; _Publ. Hudson's
Bay Record Soc. X. (1947) 223). The latter form reflects, I assume, a
Salishan variant.
